Used for holding jewellery pieces firmly in place – In the jewellery industry to help hold items whilst setting and engraving. Heat up the shellac with a flame stick item into the shellac and dry/harden then set or engrave as desired- heat up with open flame again to soften shellec remove item – any shellac left on the metal can just be dissolved in acetone or ethanol.
Shellac is a resin secreted by the female lac bug, on trees in the forests of India and Thailand. It is processed and sold as dry flakes (pictured) and dissolved in ethanol to make liquid – shellac, which is used as a brush-on colorant, food glaze and wood finish.
