Using The Best Gem Tester

There is no gem testing machine that will simply light up with the name of one gemstone, giving a positive 100% guaranteed identification. Each time you test a stone, the reading will give a selection of possible stones. When choosing a model, the choice is between something very quick and easy to use that gives an approximate selection of stones, or something more complicated and time-consuming that gives a more precise selection. Gem testers merely suggest possibilities and you must use a combination of experience and other tests to come to a conclusion.

Learn The Trade

Before buying equipment & testing gemstones, it is best to get familiar with the different types of gemstones you will be working with you need to have knowledge on conductivity, refractive index, crystal structure & hardness. Therefore, it would be to your benefit to read and/or study books such asĀ  “Gemstones Of The World”. This book covers over 1400 gemstones to their geographical locations scientific, physical & colour properties. Read up on how they were formed, structured & mined. Take a course with the trusted and experienced The Gem Lab .Ā

Presidium Gem Tester

Presidium Gem Tester

Provides a quick & easy way to identify diamonds and separate the most popular coloured gem stones from one another. This valuable tool can eliminate some human error when identifying precious gems. The Presidium Gem Testers accurate performance is based on the fact that different gem stones conduct heat at different rates. Since diamond is an exceptional thermal conductor and cubic zirconia is not, the first diamond testers used a heated probe to detect heat dissipation. They were very effective at distinguishing natural diamond from cubic zirconia, as well as other gem stone groups.

Advantages of Thermal testers:

  • Works on any stone, you are not limited to transparent stones with a flat top (table), they even work on ‘rough’ (uncut) stones and cabochons
  • If you really don’t have time for ‘learning’ or ‘training’, or not working slowly and carefully, you will not have the right base of education to make a guaranteed evaluation.

Despite its limitations, it is still useful for pulling out gemstones worthy of further investigation, e.g. you may be interested in stones that might be ruby/sapphire and not at all interested in anything that is probably glass. It is also particularly easy and fast to use and can be used on any stone no matter how it might be mounted.

Smart Pro Gem Tester

Smart Pro Gem Tester

The Smart-Pro Gem-Eye was developed to distinguish between diamond and other simulants by way of thermal conductivity. Diamonds, with their exceptional heat conductivity properties are unlike any other simulant, and are therefore not easily replicable.

Features

  • High efficiency gem tester
  • Retractable thermoelectric probe tip that ensures constant pressure between probe tip and gemstone
  • Industryā€™s thinnest probe tip (0.48mm) for testing diamonds as small as 0.01ct
  • LEDs indicator
  • Metal alert LEDs with buzzer sound to ensure that probe tip is in contact with gemstone during testing
  • Easy-to-read analog panel display
  • No waiting time between tests
  • Built-in diamond and simulant test discs for reference
  • Bluetooth enabled with an App

Gem Refractometer

Gem Refractometer

Gem Refractometer Utilizing lenses and prisms to project a shadow line into a small glass internally. The refractive index is seen through the view finder. 1.31 ā€“ 1.81 RI. The index is used to identify the authenticity and quality of gems. Testers have been subjected to thorough and extensive laboratory tests, and will generally give a clear and reliable reading of the stone, gemstone, gold or diamonds being tested under proper use.
