How To Use A Vernier

Digital Vernier Caliper

The Many Uses Of The Digital Vernier Caliper

Digital Vernier Caliper

Vernier Calipers are measuring tools used for measuring dimensions of objects. Measurements are precise with readings up to 0,01 inches or mm. Always make sure your reading is at 0,00 before taking any measurements. The Vernier Caliper can take four different kinds of readings: outside measurements, inside measurements, depth measurements & step measurements.

1. Outside Measurement

  • This is the most basic measurements done by a caliper.
  • Slide the jaws open.
  • Place the caliper over the object being measured.
  • Slide the jaws until they make contact the object.
  • Read or record your measurement/s.

2. Inside Measurement

  • Uses the smaller jaws on the top of the caliper.
  • Slide the caliper closed.
  • Place the inside-measuring jaws into the area being measured.
  • Slide the jaws as far apart as they can go.
  • Read or record the measurement/s.

NB! Calipers MUST NOT be locked, as this will result in readings not being accurate.

3. Depth Measurement

  • Make use of the depth-blade that extends out of the far end of the vernier.
  • Press the machined end of the caliper against the top part of the hole that is being measured.
  • Open the caliper until the depth blade makes contact with the bottom of the object.
  • Read or record the measurement/s.

4. Step Measurement

  • This is the secret use of the vernier caliper, which is extremely useful for various measurements.
  • Slightly open the caliper.
  • Place the sliding jaw on the upper step of the area that is being measured.
  • Open the caliper until the fixed jaw makes contact with the lower step.
  • Read or record the measurement/s.
